Bone densitometry can detect osteoporosis, a potentially crippling disease characterized by the loss of bone tissue. Osteoporosis affects approximately 25 million Americans, 80 percent of whom are women. Approximately 50 percent of women over 50 are at risk of this type of fracture.

Also referred to as a DEXA scan (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptometry), bone densitometry is an exam to screen for low bone density or osteoporosis.

We send a very low dose of X-ray radiation through predetermined body regions. There is a sensor on the other side of the table that measures how many of the X-rays pass directly through the bone and how many are stopped by the bone. This information is then analyzed and processed by the technologist for our specially trained radiologists to interpret.

Your appointment will last 30 minutes. Enhanced Medical Imaging will offer bone density exams at our Coos Bay center in March of 2008.
